Introduction
Tableau is a leading, user-friendly visual analytics platform that enables individuals and organizations to analyze, visualize, and share data insights through drag-and-drop actions. Founded in 2003, it leverages VizQL technology to turn data from various sources into actionable insights without requiring coding skills, and is now part of Salesforce.
It focuses on transforming data into actionable insights through data visualization, covering everything from connecting to various data sources (Excel, SQL) to building interactive dashboards. Core modules include data prep (joins, blending, unions), calculations, chart creation (maps, trends), and publishing to Tableau Cloud/Server.
Tableau course content typically follows a progression from foundational data connection to advanced analytical techniques and dashboard distribution. Standard curricula are often divided into three main levels: Fundamentals, Intermediate, and Advanced.
Learning Objectives:
- Master data visualization best practices to effectively present results.
- Develop skills to pass Tableau Desktop Specialist or Certified Data Analyst exams.
- Apply Tableau in real-world scenarios, such as in finance, marketing, or healthcare.
Module One: Tableau Fundamentals (Basic)
This level focuses on the basic workspace and creating essential visualizations.
- Getting Started: Introduction to the interface (data pane, shelves, marks card) and different file types
(.twb, .twbx). - Connecting to Data: Loading data from Excel, CSV, or SQL servers; choosing between Live connections and Extracts.
- Basic Visualizations: Building foundational charts such as Bar, Line, Pie, Scatter Plots, and Maps.
- Data Organization: Sorting, filtering, and grouping data; creating hierarchies and sets.
- Basic Calculations: Introduction to arithmetic calculations, custom aggregations, and ratios.
Module Two: Tableau Intermediate
This level focuses on data preparation and more complex interactivity.
- Data Preparation: Using the Data Interpreter, pivoting, and splitting data; combining data via
Joins, Unions, and Blends. - Calculations & Parameters: Mastering Table Calculations, Aggregate Dimensions, and using Parameters to let users modify values dynamically.
- Advanced Mapping: Using custom geocoding, background images, and dual-axis maps.
- Analytics Features: Adding trend lines, forecasting, reference lines, and box plots.
Module Three: Tableau Advanced & Expert
Advanced content targets high-level analytical modeling and enterprise-level publishing.
- Level of Detail (LOD) Expressions: Mastering FIXED, INCLUDE, and EXCLUDE expressions for complex cohort analysis.
- Complex Visuals: Building advanced charts like Gantt, Waterfall, Pareto, Bump, and Control charts.
- Dashboard Mastery: Using Dashboard Actions, layout containers, and designing for specific device displays.
- Publishing & Governance: Sharing workbooks to Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud; managing permissions, schedules, and alerts.
Module Four: Supplementary Modules
- Tableau Prep Builder: A dedicated course or module for cleaning, shaping, and combining data
before analysis. - Data Storytelling: Developing “Stories” that guide users through a narrative rather than just
static reports. - Integration: Establishing connections with R or Python for advanced statistical modeling within Tableau.
