Introduction

Labour
law typically covers the legal frameworks governing the relationship between employers and employees, as well as the rules and regulations related to relationship and engagement in the workplace. This includes topics
like employment contracts, workplace safety, trade union law, contract law, sales of goods, and consumer protection. 

This course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and navigate the legal aspects of employment and business transactions. 

Course Contents

Historical Development and Sources: Explores the origins and evolution of labour law, including relevant legislation and case law in a specific jurisdiction (e.g., Nigerian Labour Law). 

·      Employment Contracts: Examines the formation, terms, and termination of employment contracts, including the rights and obligations of employers and employees. 

·     Wages and Working Hours: Covers minimum wage laws, wage regulation, working hours, overtime, and leave entitlements. 

·      Trade Unions and Collective Bargaining: Deals with the legal status of trade unions, their role in collective bargaining, and the process of negotiating and enforcing collective agreements. 

·      Workplace Safety and Health: Focuses on laws and regulations related to workplace safety, health standards, and the responsibilities of employers and employees in maintaining a safe working environment. 

·       Termination of Employment: Examines the legal grounds for termination of employment, including dismissal, redundancy, and resignation, and the remedies available for wrongful dismissal. 

·     Dispute Resolution: Explores mechanisms for resolving labour disputes, including conciliation, arbitration, and litigation. 

·   Nigerian Labour Law: Covers the Labour Act, Trade Union Act, and other relevant legislation governing employment relationships.
