Introduction
Measurement and Evaluation involve using tools (like tests) to assign numerical values (measurement) to attributes, then judging the worth or quality (evaluation) of those results in relation to specific objectives, forming a cycle to assess learning, guide instruction, and improve educational programs by determining “how much” (measurement) and “how good” (evaluation). Measurement provides quantitative data (scores, percentages), while evaluation interprets this data to make qualitative judgments and drive improvement, often using formative (during learning) and summative (at the end) approaches.
- Measurement: Assigning numbers to qualities or attributes (e.g., a score of 85/100) using tools like tests, questionnaires, or observation.
- Evaluation: Judging the value or quality of what was measured, answering “how good?” and determining if objectives were met.
- Assessment: The broader process that includes both measurement and evaluation, focusing on supporting learning and providing feedback.
