Introduction
Supply chain management (SCM) is management of the flow of goods, data, and finances related to a product or service, from the procurement of raw materials to the delivery of the product at its final destination. It includes all activities that turn raw materials into finished goods and put them into customer’s hands. This can include sourcing, design, production, warehousing, shipping, and distribution. Supply chain management reduces production costs by ensuring that assembly factories receive timely shipments of raw materials. This way, businesses can avoid material shortages and delays in production.
It can therefore be deduced that SCM integrates Procurement, Logistics and Inventory management to achieve the overall goals of improve efficiency, product quality, risk mitigation, productivity enhancement, and customer satisfaction. This underscores the reason why supply chain managers coordinate the movement of goods from suppliers to customers. They optimize transportation routes, select logistics providers, manage warehousing and distribution centers, and track shipments to ensure on-time delivery and to reduce costs.
As a supply chain manager, you’ll oversee and manage every stage of the production flow, from purchasing the raw materials to the delivery of the final product. You’ll ensure the right amount of product is made at the right time, as well as coordinating the storage of the product.
