Introduction

Nigeria’s tax system, recently consolidated under the Nigeria Tax Act (NTA) and Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) of 2025, operates on a decentralized framework with federal, state, and local governments responsible for different taxes. The system aims to be more progressive, focusing on revenue generation and ease of compliance

A course on Understanding Basic Tax matters in Nigeria typically covers fundamental concepts, the types of taxes, administration, and compliance requirements for individuals and businesses. The specific contents can vary slightly but generally follow a structure that includes the following modules:

Key Principles

  • Mandatory Compliance: All individuals and companies deriving income from or operating in Nigeria are obligated to pay taxes and obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN).
  • Progressive Taxation: Personal Income Tax is progressive, meaning higher earners pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes.
  • Self-Assessment: Nigeria operates a self-assessment tax system where taxpayers declare their income and expenses, though authorities can conduct audits.
  • Digital Transformation: The new laws mandate digital filing and e-invoicing for VAT-registered businesses to improve transparency and efficiency.
